The Church of The Holy Cross
The Church of the Holy Cross is to be found not far from today’s parish church (the one time cathedral) Saint Asel. It was built in the 9th century on the foundations of an earlier Roman building and its shape resembles an irregular one-armed Greek cross. The arms are vaulted in a cubic arch which is dominated by an irregular elliptical dome. In the 11th century the prefect Godečaj had the church restored as can be seen by the lintel, above the entrance door, on which the prefect’s name is carved.
