Early Croatian boats
The remains of two early Croatian boats, of which one has been reconstructed, represent the most important find, not only for Croatian underwater archaeology, but for the wider Mediterranean area. The boats were discovered at the entrance to the port of Nin, at a location called Usta.
Radio-carbon analysis (C14) carried out on samples of wood, dated them to the second half of the 11th century. The shape of these boats categorises them into a kind of narrow and fast rowing boat, with the option of using a square-shaped sail, giving a resemblance to Viking ships.
