Zaton – The Church of Saint Andrew
In the area of the port of ancient Aenona in Zaton the remains of profane buildings were discovered. In the 6th century a church was built in this complex, dedicated to the apostle Andrew. There are fragments of architectural and church furniture as well as sarcophagi belonging to the early Christian era.
The Church of Saint Andrew appears in archive information throughout the whole Middle Ages. At the time of the Venetian-Turkish wars in the 17th century, it was deserted, partly destroyed and turned into a defence tower.
