The Iron age
(900 BC – The beginning of the 1st c.)
The area from the River Raša in Istria to the River Krka in northern Dalmatia was inhabited by the Liburnians – bearers and creators of the Iron Age culture. They were mentioned in the works of ancient writers, the earliest in the 6th century BC (Hecataeus) and the 5th century (Skimno) and the 4th century (Pseudo Scylax).
The beginning of the Iron Age in the Liburnian area was characterised by intensive settlements (Zadar, Nin, Radovin, Bribir, Skradin…). The most prominent centres of the parent Liburnian area were Zadar and Nin.
